WC0001 - Sunset over Portpatrick Harbour, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

July 2012 - The day had been beautiful, warm and sunny. As the evening approached, clouds came in, bringing rain over Ireland on the horizon and the light turned golden. A real case of being at the right place at the right time.

WC0002 - Culzean Castle, near Maybole, Carrick, Ayrshire, Scotland

August 2010 - Standing on a dramatic cliff top which overlooks the Firth of Clyde, Culzean Castle dates from the 14th century. The castle belonged to the clan Kennedy who gave the house to the National Trust for Scotland in 1945 with instructions to give the appartment of the top floor to President Eisenhower who was still general of the army at the time.

WC0003 - Entrance to Culzean Castle, near Maybole, Carrick, Ayrshire, Scotland

August 2010 - The entrance to the castle is through an old archway which gives the first glance to the castle itself. I love the bridge beyond the archway which guides the eyes towards the castle before swerving to the right, away from sight. There are many weddings organised at the castle and the marquis is, I believe, a permanent feature.

WC0004 - The Armoury, Culzean Castle, near Maybole, Carrick, Ayrshire, Scotland

August 2010 - The bridge zigzags its way to the Armoury, leading the eye into the picture.

WC0005 - The Armoury, Culzean Castle, near Maybole, Carrick, Ayrshire, Scotland

August 2010 - This is an HDR photograph of the Armoury. I love the symmetry of the building and the way the clock tower archway, leading into the courtyard, frames perfectly the door in the background. Funnily enough, in order to frame that door perfectly within the archway, I had to stand slightly aside which forced the wall in the foreground to be slighly off symmetry. The door, of course, is the culprit.

WC0006 - Sundial, Culzean Castle, near Maybole, Carrick, Ayrshire, Scotland

August 2010 - The sundial stands on the terraced seafront where the cannons are. It used to be at Calder House in West Lothian but was given to the Trust by the West Lothian Council in 1971 and was restored in 1984. This makes it the odd one but it certainly is a very handsome odd one.

WC0007 - Cannon, Culzean Castle, near Maybole, Carrick, Ayrshire, Scotland

August 2010 - On the terraced sea-front are two ceremonial cannons which form a centerpiece and face the wonderful views of the Isle of Arran, The Mull of Kintyre, the Dunure headland and Culzean Bay, some of which are visible in the photograph.

WC0008 - Mini Tower Gate, Culzean Castle, near Maybole, Carrick, Ayrshire, Scotland

August 2010 - The front garden is a huge terraced lawn flanked by another terrace then the castle itself. Access to the lawn area from the terrace is via gates that look like mini towers. The detail is rather amazing and well worth a photograph.

WC0009 - Feature Fountain, Culzean Castle, near Maybole, Carrick, Ayrshire, Scotland

August 2010 - The foutain lies on the terraced lawn and represents Triton blowing a conch while being supported by dolphins inside a scalloped basin. Sadly, the fountain was not switched on that day or they would have been water coming out of the conch and the dophins' nostrils. Still, an impressive fountain.
