CB0024 - Loch Tay Crannog, Kenmore, Perthshire, Scotland

February 2016 - The Crannog with Kenmore in the background.

A Crannog is an Iron Age dwelling built some distance from the shores, on top of a wooden platform or a man-made island. Family groups lived in it and kept their crops and animals there. Access being from a narrow path at the same level as the platform, above the water, made it easier to defend.

This Crannog is a reconstruction based on archeological evidence from the Crannog that once stood there. Loch Tay bore more than 20 crannogs. It stands on the south side of the loch, at the Scottish Crannog Centre which shows how life was for the Crannog dwellers.
